Where we produce

The mining and the processing of the rock salt are carried out in the sicilian mines of Petralia (Palermo) as well as Racalmuto and Realmonte (Agrigento).

Petralia

PETRALIA is one of the richest salt deposits in Europe: a huge lens of salt contained in the heart of a mountain situated at 1,100 metres above sea level.

Petralia salt naturally has a very special and matchless quality.

Exceptional purity that can be seen by the particular brilliance of its crystals.

The only production site in the world where the whole production process takes place underground in more than 70 kilometres of tunnels, from (harvesting) mining to packaging and storaging.

This is where Italkali’s best known products come from: Sale di Sicilia and Depurel brands.

Automated lines transport the product to the processing plants without any manipulation or any chemical processing.

A ventilation system creates a safe and comfortable environment.

There are two separated production lines: one for human consumption, selected by means of prior testing and protected from any manual contact, and the other one for industrial applications.

The most natural salt product on the market which is packed underground and is delivered to the consumer just as it was created by nature.

The Sale di Sicilia salt sees the light again after 6 million years only upon the opening of the package.

Racalmuto

The RACALMUTO mine is located in the Southern part of Sicily (between the provinces of Agrigento and Caltanissetta).

The mine is accessible through tunnels and ramps along which heavy vehicles can travel and it is 100 metres deep.

Adjoint to the mine there is the packing plant: two separated production lines, one for human consumption, selected by means of prior testing and protected from any manual contact, and the other one for industrial applications,  mainly for animal feed, tanneries and dyeing work industries .

Realmonte

REALMONTE overlooks the south coast of Sicily, 5 kilometres from Porto Empedocle, the salt terminal.

The deposit is a huge salt lens lying between Porto Empedocle and Siculiana.

Has reserves of 70 million tons of rock salt and substantial quantities of kainite (potassium minerals).

It currently produces more than 1 million tons of salt per year, mainly destined for road de-icing as well as industrial purposes.

Porto Empedocle

Porto Empedocle, close to Realmonte about 5 km, is our own managed loading terminal, with its more than 20.000 sq.m of warehouse and a completely automatic loading system, loads all the ships for both the Italian and overseas markets.
